Tom is impressive in his ability to explain and illustrate the comprehensive workflow process with ArchiCAD. He will also run a 90 min workshop on the ArchiCAD workflow.

Our Thursday speakers will later be offering one 90 minute workshop during the event to allow users get more deeply into the subject matter of the talk.

Friday 9th Sept

Introduction to ACUE and the Friday programme: 0900-0915: David Nicholson-Cole

Graphisoft Morning: 0915-1045: Plenary: Graphisoft reveal the next great thing!
ArchiCAD 9.0 was announced to the world at ACUE in Sept 2004, and it has been well received. Graphisoft have new products, including Constructor and Estimator and Dynaproject and have good collaborations with other software manufacturers. Every year, GS have had something good and new to show. Maxonform is an astounding addition to the ArchiCAD user's system.

Technical details of some of the presentation including Maxonform, Constructor, Dynaproject can be examined close up in some of the later 90minute Q&A sessions with the Graphisoft developer/support team.

Coffee/Tea: 1045-1115

Half Plenaries: 1115-1300: Covering subjects which are of greatest interest.
A Half plenary is a major topic presented to between 1/3 and 2/3 of the congregation (while the other fraction are at the other Half plenary!). Choice of:

Studio A-B

The ArchiCAD Office:  Organising Practice standards, master layouts, templates and libraries, DWG/DXF interchange, for efficient use of ArchiCAD in the small office. presented by Andreas Lettner from Innsbruck, Austria.

LIGHTWORKS, Rendering, Lighting and Materials:  Rendering and Presentation, using Lightworks - Lighting, materials, image settings, LW parameters - presented by Dwight Atkinson from Vancouver, Canada .
Outline of Dwight's Presentation

Lunch: 1300-1400: Buffet in the Studio Building

1400-1545 : Plenary and Workshops - you choose!

Workshops: in small groups
These will run simultaneously in each time period. The ordering of workshops in these boxes will gradually evolve as the program develops, but this shows a working outline. We have tried to reduce the number to reduce the agony of choice.

'Rolling Thunder' Plenary: (running at the same time in Plenary Space) - all of these presentations will be expanded by 90 min workshops later in the program. The idea of 'Rolling Thunder' is to have a continuous Plenary with half hour junctions, enabling people to get either a preview of a 90min workshop they will attend later, or to get a glimpse of a workshop that they missed, or just get a taster of something good. With some timetabling skill, delegates can juggle their attendances at either a workshop or a plenary.
Facilitated by
Mike Hohmann.

  • Ildiko Szabo of Abvent, Paris and Budapest.
    • Abvent are radiant with pleasure to launch Artlantis R, the 'Lightworks killer' that supports global illumination and Radiosity rendering quality, and is upgradable from your Artlantis 4.5.
  • David Rimmington of Informatix, Cambridge
    • Informatix produce Piranesi which is a specialised '3D painting' tool, allowing you to start with a simple rendering of a 3D model, and quickly develop it into high quality images ready for client presentations. it puts the 'soul' back into renderings.

'Rolling Thunder' Plenary:(running at the same time in Plenary Space) - all of these presentations will be expanded by 90 min workshops earlier or later in the program.
Facilitated by
John Counsell.

  • Andrew Marsh of Square One, Cardiff
    • Square One make Ecotect, one of the leading solutions in energy analysis - building physics predictions. (read Dominic Gallello's article on Building Energy Performance). Ecotect is a complete environmental design tool which couples an intuitive 3D modeling interface with extensive solar, thermal, lighting, acoustic and cost analysis functions.
  • Pavol Elias of Dunako, Slovakia
    • ArchiCAD and the Web: Dunako produce Archishock3D : Combining Shockwave3D exporter add-on for ArchiCAD and architectural Shockwave template movies created in Macromedia Director MX allows the architect to build a simple interactive 3D presentation in just a few mouse clicks directly from ArchiCAD.
  • Peter Agnew of University of Nottingham
    • Sketchup 5 advanced view: Peter is doing two staged workshops on 'Sketchup intermediate to advanced', but in this short plenary he will summarise some cardinal rules for achieving results with Sketchup, including the link to ArchiCAD, Ecotect and Radiance.

'Rolling Thunder' Plenary: (running at the same time in Plenary Space) - some of these presentations will be expanded by 90 min workshops earlier or later in the program. Facilitated by David Nicholson-Cole.

  • Ben Wallbank of John Robertson Architects
    • Construction Communication: Ben stunned ACUE 2004 with his evening talk on ArchiCAD in Construction Communication. In the year since he has developed this work remarkably, and has new buildings as case studies. (His presentation at the School in Nottingham in November 2004 changed the way that many students present construction with or without ArchiCAD).
  • Matthew Lohden of Lohden Steele, California.
    • Smart Symbols: GDL isn't just for making clever 3D objects. Some of the most productive uses for library parts are in the 2D symbols that take the tedium out of repetitive annotations. Whether adapting existing parts or writing your own, having a set of symbols that works precisely to your standards is one of the greatest time savers you can have.
  • Miguel Krippahl from Oporto, Portugal
    • Better Moviemaking with ArchiCAD: there is a lot more to moviemaking/flythroughs than you realised, and this workshop puts you right if your own flythroughs are ghastly! Do they make your client feel like a flying insect.

If you wish to indicate your interest in the workshop topics, you can go on to the ArchiCAD-University Community Portal in which you can read more detailed descriptions and submit votes for workshops in the POLL section.

You are not obligated to attend the workshops you vote for, in fact, you can vote for a number between 4 and ten, which gives us a clear indication of the likely popularity of the topic. See the page on ACUE Workshops for more detailed info.

Saturday 10th sept

0900-0915 - 15 mins extra buffer time to allow residential delegates to pack, hand back keys, and put bags into safe keeping in Derby Hall.

Half Plenary: 0915-1045: Choice of:

Studio A-B

The Intelligent Building model :  ArchiCAD is at the centre of a world of smart building design, with steel design, building physics, services design, clash detection, navigation with Navisworks, IFC, Facilities Management etc.
Presented by Howard Gill from Nottingham.
Outline of Howard's presentation

Plenary Space

Object making & Better 3D :  Better 3D & Object Making. We will exhaust the capabilities and disabilities and the conventional tools, and explore required workarounds, while always keeping an eye on documentation. Solid ops, profiler, mesh tricks, exploiting autoscripted objects; and a bit of
script tweaking, nothing you can't handle. Most non-random constructions are possible in AC. Presented by James Murray from Virginia USA .
Outline of James' presentation

'Rolling Thunder' Plenary: running at the same time in Plenary Space. Facilitated by Adrian Harms.

  • Adrian Harms of Bite Design
    • Modules and Teamwork: Larger Projects require time saving techniques to avoid duplication and confusion. Hot-link Modules are an essential technique in large projects - These also allow members of the team to work on different parts of the project. Teamwork also allows this, but there are basic rules for the team and network to be learnt.
  • Ken Good of Applecore
    • Better 2D: Insights into smart ways to use the ArchiCAD Navigator to get better 2D in ArchiCAD,and improve workflow from the model to the Plotmaker layout book, hotlinking to ArchiCAD.

Lunch: 1300-1400: Buffet in the Studio Building

Tips and Tricks: 1400-1600: to round off the Saturday afternoon.
Delegate and tutors show off some special tricks or case studies.

"Tips and Tricks" is now a tradition for the Summer and Winter Schools, to have a final session in which Delegates come up and show some of the work they have been doing in the previous year. It's also a chance for tutors to show an extra trick that was enjoyed during the workshops, and for announcements to be made about future events, like the ArchiCAD Winter School.

Saturday Evening

Night out in the Centre! 1800---> We normally have about 30 people staying overnight for the Saturday night, so we go for a meal and walkabout in Nottingham City Centre. This is a fun experience for the long distance travellers. Nottingham has a vibrant nightlife with the highest concentration of clubs and pubs in the country - it's very safe (but get taxi back to hall at midnight). We have booked Antibo's again, the Italian restaurant on the edge of the city centre for 7.00pm. You can locate Antibo's from Streetmap.co.uk . We will issue maps. The arrangement is nicely simplified as it was last year, 3 course meal for a tenner, or for items from the special menu, 3 course meal for 15pounds.
