The Archicad 10 Office / Focus on your Practice / User Surgery Computers were supposed to let you get more work done with less labour. We will focus on the particular ways you can achieve (or advance) this in your practice. Bring your biggest problems and we will look for the best solutions, and provide ways to document them, so you can go back to your office and put them right to work. Using the power of ArchiCAD 10, organising Practice standards, advanced user interface (working environment), master layouts, templates and libraries, DWG/DXF interchange, for efficient use of ArchiCAD in the small office.

ArchiCAD 10 for large projects Larger Projects require time saving techniques to avoid duplication and confusion. Hotlinked Modules are an essential technique in large projects - these also allow members of the team to work on different parts of the project. ArchiCAD's Teamwork also allows this, and there are basic rules for the team and network to be learnt. How differently do these work with ArchiCAD 10, and how can existing models with Teamwork and Modules be migrated from 9 to 10?

Interactive Scheduler with ArchiCAD 10 The Interactive Schedule workshop will look at how easily users can create interactive schedules, how they can control their content and format the output. IS are improved under ArchiCAD 10. We will look at the other uses to which the interactive scheduler can be put, for example as a find and select tool or for changing the parameters of objects already placed in the project. To be able to extract schedules of elements and objects from your single building model is to ensure consistency across project documentation and avoid those embarrassing errors!

ArchiCAD on the Web ArchiCAD and the Layout Book (was Plotmaker) environment have powerful Web publishing features for the construction team. It is also possible to export 3D environments to the web from ArchiCAD with ArchiShock 3D. Take your architectural ArchiCAD data and deploy them on the Web. Also, have a look at 3D Web Presentation with Turntool, recently equipped with ArchiCAD connectivity.

Lightworks and Maxwell Update on Lightworks rendering, Materials + material management, effects, parameter, Lights, Lightworks tricks. Also, Maxwell Rendering - Maxwell is a specil rendering engine which has ArchiCAD integration and it is gaining popularity for its realism and handling of large scenes. A new plug in is available to link ArchiCAD 10 to Maxwell.

Maxonform Maxonform is one of the most exciting additions to ArchiCAD ever! As a freeform editor, it is not only able to make the most fantastic shapes from new, it is also able to work with astonishing facility on existing Archicad elements and GDL objects. Not a sales talk (you're sold on it already...!) a How-To talk.

Cinema 4D Beginners

A special tutorial on Cinema 4D (AKA Maxonform) - creative building with Cinema - is this the best 3D modelling tool of all?

Piranesi Piranesi is a specialised '3D painting' tool, allowing you to start with a simple rendering of a 3D model, and quickly develop it into high quality images ready for client presentations (Mac and PC). You can use Piranesi to quickly develop photorealistic images, by painting in textures and scenery with automatic perspective and masking; or you can Piranesi's wealth of effects to generate non-photorealistic images that have a more subtle, hand-rendered feel and focus the client's mind of what is important in the design. You can even use Piranesi with a 2D plan or elevation image, or to generate Panoramas!

Data Exchange dataXchange workshop - making your everyday life easier: it is about bring in and using drawings in different file formats (DXF/DWG/IFC...) from consultant partners into your ARCHICAD VB model without destroying your project structure. also showing working methods of how to set up a translator script for import and export DXF/DWG. Automated export of VB drawings through publisher tools. Another topic is how to include or just underlay "foreign drawings" using weather hotlink modules or XREF or raise a project from picture scans. Herbert Peter

Objectmaking no GDL We all have to make library objects, but some users don't realise how much can be done without in depth GDL knowledge. There are good tricks and add-ons you can use, and you can improve your objects with a tiny amount of tinkering with the GDL object editor. ArchiCAD 10 provides more modelling opportunities for object building. Note the changes to the Library Manager in AC10.

GDL Beginners Introduction to creative GDL scripting for the very nervous beginner (with or without experience of Objectmaking without GDL). - using an introductory exercise from the GDL Cookbook. At this level, GDL is unchanged since version 8.1.

Herbert Peter
GDL Next Steps Creative GDL scripting for those who have dabbled a bit, or took the beginners course and who want to take it a bit further. This will introduce you to some essential techniques and ways of thinking. At this level, GDL is unchanged since version 8.1.

GDL More advanced Seminar GDL for those who use GDL already and want an informed seminar to display advanced objects, stretch the boundaries, unearth answers to frustrating questions, plan future initiatives in GDL. Issues with migration of Libraries to ArchiCAD 10. New GDL commands in AC10 (not many). GDL Style issues. Does the Special Menu still have a use? Glob_Context and Global Variables. New ways of publishing GDL Objects on the Web.

Abvent special: Studio Artlantis Studio, is the latest version of the classic rendering and lighting tool, which has powers that Lightworks does not, such as the FastRadiosity™ engine which now lets you compute images in radiosity -- even in preview. We saw Artlantis R in ACUE 2005, but Artlantis Studio now offers advanced functions such as scene animation and object animation There's always a good reason to show it at the Summer School. Its predecessor, Artlantis 4.5 is well known and loved by thousands of ArchiCAD users.

ArchiCAD 3D, Navisworks and IFC/XML/CIS2 Navisworks - navigation realtime rendering software that can handle millions of polygons in real time, allowing easy navigation tools for exploring large models and townscape - effortless export of Archicad models and layer information to Navisworks, essential for prediction of construction. There is also the issue of Data Exchange, for example with Steel and other structural software. XML and IFC are vital protocols for engaging with external software.

Workshop with Ben Wallbank: Information is Power:  Who Controls the Model?

Last year Ben suggested that 3D is happening with or without architects and that there is a danger of the architects role diminishing further to that of "cake decorator". If the move to building information modelling is lead by the Contractor and the model is made by Construction Modellers from consultants 2D information the Client is unlikely to see the full range advantages offered by BIM.  Access to the model and its information will be controlled by the contractor and the financial information contained therein will be "open book" in name only.  We (architects) need to form alliances to ensure that the model stays under the direct control of the Client throughout the process.  The model can then develop in complexity throughout a projects life and offer the chance of environmental analysis early in the process when it can be most usefully used.

Workshop with David Emery David Emery presented a case study plenary at ACUE 2003 showing his work in housing development with Archicad. More recently, he has been working freelance for Graphisoft UK, engaging on a diversity of projects, including part of the 2012 Olympics. This year, he will talk about using Archicad in residential-scale development; tips, tricks, and suggestions for improved workflow'. "I'll demonstrate some of the techniques I've developed over the last few years to model buildings quickly and efficiently to ensure proper output of all sorts of documentation." David Emery
3D Printing 3D Printing (or rapid prototyping) is the ability to generate a solid physical model from a CAD 3D model. Models can be carved from solids, as with a CNC router, or can be built up from small grains or resin blobs. This has advanced (like CAD itself) to become cheaper, more accessible, more reliable, and an Architect's office can seriously consider it's own installation. Notably, this is now a lot easier for ArchiCAD users, with export to VRML. There are several questions to be answered. Herbert Peter
