Half Plenary: 0915-1045:

The Rendering Special: Pavol on Maxwell, David R on Piranesi, Ildiko on Artlantis Studio

A good picture of the different programmes working with ArchiCad. I got very impressed by the Maxwell rendering. Mette Mikkelsen

A few years back the rendering presentations had plenty of wow factor and were exciting and inspiring ..... its all looking a bit familiar now, the rendering packages don't have many places to go. Still wish I really had the time to master the techniques on any of the packages. Richard Payne

Maxwell is an impressive new tool in the ArchiCAD rendering armoury. The best quality renderer with a direct AC interface. It will take some learning, however, and for everyday use I think we'll stick with Artlantis. Ben Wallbank

Wow on Maxwell, amazing images, not sure i remember anything of how to use it but then i dont think that was the point of the lecture really. Had already seen the other 2 packages but helped to reinforce what i picked up. Matthew Wingrove

This was very useful - especially impressed by Piranesi (as many others were) - I can't believe i haven't seen it before. I think it was a good idea to have this 'rendering special' as going to 3 separate rendering workshops would mean missing out on many other things. Phil Oldfield

The Maxwell render was amazing; I can only complain that there isn't a free student version. The introduction was quick and explained the process and the end result well. The Piranesi and Artlantis talks were almost copies of the workshops and so were not quite as interesting. Also, maybe Maxwell should go last because after being shown photograph-like renders Artlantis seems less impressive despite its obvious bonuses. Ben Hopkins

Some beautiful illustrations of work archived using rendering technologies, and their compatibility with ArchiCAD. This talk was visually very stimulating. David R demonstrated with great clarity and efficiency the uses of Piranasi, which impressed me a great deal. Sharon Sh-Cigari

A great overview of 3 very interesting rendering packages. All have their own strength and weaknesses. a great opportunity to get an overview of all in 1 place. Phil Green

Maxwell looks very promising with a very profitant presentation by Pavol. Frank Hollinger

Maxwell was absorbing, and interesting to see how far rendering has come. Chris Phillips

Great rendering programs but I will stick with Artlantis Studio, so user friendly. Daniel Dusoswa

Half Plenary: 0915-1045:

The ArchiCAD 10 Office:standards, training, templates etc, Matthew Lohden

Excellent Presentation. Too short for the number of questions. Some hand out notes at the end of the presentation would have been great as the volume of information was huge. Ray McNally
[Eds note: did you not see Matthews handout in the conference pack?
]

Well documented and delivered coverage of getting projects organized in the real world, with real world dead-lines to meet. Mike Willey

Matthew focused on new features of 10 as they relate to standards etc. He did a very good job of hitting the high points. James Murray

I am a great fan of Matthew, and he didn't disappoint me ! Great look at organisation and standards with special reference to the new features. Very, very convincing of the absolute necessity of spending the time to set up the templates etc., the benefits reaped will more than pay off the initial time spent. Excellent course notes. Peter Bennison

Well, it was very complex as you had to know your Archicad 10 to benefit from it. Frank Hollinger

Yes More of Matthew and as always brilliant. Ross Cahill-O'Brien

This is the second time I've attended Matthew's solid presentation about organising ArchiCAD for productivity. Highly recommended! Aladar Kish

Essential attendance Chris Phillips

Great update on the old story - this is another session that is a priority for me each time. Nigel Walter

Further to Andreas' presentation, re-inforcing the idea of standards and templates. Again this session was spoilt by one or two individuals asking questions of a highly specific nature and side tracking the presenter's programme. Could it not be arranged for questions to be raised at the end of the session so that the whole presentation can be made? Martin Kelly

Meet the Team

Tips and Tricks: Delegates Contributions: 1400-1600

*Pregnant Buildings in Denmark (Per+Marie)

I like this project and have seen it many times - of course I'm danish! Mette Mikkelsen

Inspiring view of what you can do wih gdl leading to the client having some control over their design but within certain rules. Phil Oldfield

I liked the use of GDL to build in design rules. I could imagine ways to use these techniques in my shop layout work with franchisees, so it was a good inspiration. Peter Bennison

GREAT as we delivered the technology behind. Frank Hollinger

Interesting. Nigel Walter

Great idea, could be the start of instant working drawings generated by GDL Daniel Dusoswa

*Winter School Promo (DNC)

I really hope that I will be able to join you once again for this good event! Mette Mikkelsen

Made me think about my skis in the back on my cupboard at home, and how unloved they were looking right now! Sharon Sh-Cigari

Hilarious. Every time you promote it I get closer to going. James Murray

I love to see DNC happy and emotional about the Winter School, it must be good. Maybe this year ? Peter Bennison

Best selling job of the week. Martin Kelly

*Sailing School Promo (DNC+Daniel)

I thought I might join the sailing trip as well. Mette Mikkelsen

"Not so focused on ArchiCAD, more about sailing and coming ashore and having dinner." I see. :-D James Murray

We will take early bookings! Daniel Dusoswa

*La Gloriette de la Feuerkogel (Hotel annexe) (Andreas)

Let's hope that this will work so we can stay at Feuerkogel!! Mette Mikkelsen

Excellent, I would have liked to discuss the entire project in detail including the construction technique. Ray McNally

This was nice to see, as it was an example of someone quickly using ArchiCAD to design and visualise a project, which surprisingly was absent from the rest of the weekend. Ben Hopkins

Nice idea to bring all materials with helicopter, and the use of timber walls mainly. I am looking forward to see it built. Przemyslaw Gajowiak

So cool. Amazing how that has come together over the years. James Murray

Nice project, good use of AC (as one would expect from Andreas ..). Peter Bennison

Wonderful story - great project, can't wait to see the realisation... Aladar Kish

Good to see the proposal, engaging. Nigel Walter

Great job, hope to examine the final works in person. Martin Kelly

I sincerely hope that this will be built, a place we can almost call home! Daniel Dusoswa

Whale, Warship and Tank in GDL (DNC)

*Whale, Warship and Tank in GDL (DNC)

I'm expecting to se the Whale swim next time David Mette Mikkelsen

I was particularly impressed with DNC's elegant GDL support of the Imperial US war machine. (Only kidding David). Ben Wallbank

Very interesting use of GDL, It brings new meaning to living building construction for factories, docks, etc etc.. A possible new sales pitch to major manufactoring companies who wish to evaluate process layouts and flexibility in theory before a extension is commisioned by utilising the original building model. Ray McNally

I think this impressed loads of people - maybe you should have shown more work David? Phil Oldfield

Obviously this was amazing, and presented in a typically engaging DNC style, it gave people a bit of a laugh too. Ben Hopkins

Other potential uses of GDL and ArchiCAD, in a more engineering-oriented field. Sharon Sh-Cigari

David, you do so much, but one of my favorite traditions of the community is what crazy object you will pull out this year. James Murray

Impressive. Demonstrated beautifully, the power of GDL. Phil Green

Great for seeing what can be done with GDL. Nigel Walter

My chair, table and lamp have a long way to go. Truly inspirational. Martin Kelly

Wacky DNC objects. How on earth do you come up with the idea of a formula that generates the spine and ribs of a whale. And then the landing craft with perfect animated hydrolics, what can I say. DNC is the master. Daniel Dusoswa

*Phil Oldfield - Prize presentation, and a University career of ArchiCAD

Obviously the highlight!!!! - it was nice to be able to show the advantages i've gained from using ArchiCAD. Phil Oldfield

I too have been using ArchiCAD since my first year, but in my opinion not nearly as successfully; this presentation as well as Michel Rojkind's made me much more confident using ArchiCAD for my projects. Ben Hopkins

Absolutely fantastic, Phil made me have faith that there are some very clever people working in the Architecture field. Distinction level work presented. Sharon Sh-Cigari

Some interesting work, great concepts. Phil Green

Excellent material from the latter years, and interesting to see the development from the earlier projects. Phil is one bright cookie; it was great to see him given the GS prize. Nigel Walter

As always youth can aspire to so much. I'm sure Phil must have had several job offers on the day. Nice touch from Graphisoft. Martin Kelly

*Synagogue model in Vienna (Herbert)

Very good model!! There must be a huge amount of work in that model! Mette Mikkelsen

Highlighted the major problem for students when it comes to upgrading software. Ray McNally

Fantastic model. Phil Oldfield

Hard to believe that this was all done in ArchiCad. Pushing the boundaries. Daniel Dusoswa

*Sketchup animations in retail work (Peter Agnew)

Really good work! Mette Mikkelsen

What a waste of Peter's ability. Give him a better job someone. Ben Wallbank

Sorry to say i wasnt that impressed as a Sketchup user, i feel i've reached a ceiling in the program and was hoping that Peter (who initially taught us Sketchup in first year) would help me find more things to do in it, however his work didnt really seem to push the program even as much as i do. Saving grace was the Artlantis render which turned a very flat line drawing into an amazing image. Matthew Wingrove

Good demonstration of a powerful new tool . Ray McNally

If you have any doubt about the power of Sketchup Peter is able to sweep them away in a few minutes. After his presentation everybody
understood in the hall that this software wasn't a toy, but a really powerfull professional tool. Til Breton

Amazing work achieved by both ArchiCAD and particularly Sketchup. Peter is a very talented person, and his work illustrates this. He provoked my interest in the subject area a great deal. Sharon Sh-Cigari

Great work, too. Nagging feeling that I must learn SketchUp, but I can actually do all this in AC so is it worth it ? More importantly, reminded me that I must find time to actually use my Artlantis ... Peter Bennison

Excellent, as much for the type of presentation (ArtLantis) as for the content. Peter presents very well, and with suitable material should do more of this. Nigel Walter

More fine examples of up and coming talent. Martin Kelly

*SAP Ratings assistant with GDL (Rick Swann)

This is a crucial area of development. Richard Payne

Well done Richard! A lovely useful piece of work that will be invaluable for the small AC using practice. Ben Wallbank

This looked very interesting, and I'm not sure why Graphisoft haven't thought about an inbuilt calculator before, just U values for walls would be useful. The tool itself looked good. Ben Hopkins

A concept that architects could benefit from a great deal if incorporated into ArchiCAD. This talk illustrated that creative work can contribute to improving the features of ArchiCAD. Sharon S-Cigari

Could we invite Richard back for a longer session, as energy rating requirements & SBEM for non-domestic buildings have become of pressing importance. Mike Willey

He is master of labels. Why doesn't he do a workshop? James Murray

Looks like a great tool, could be of use to every ArchiCAD office. Phil Green

Excellent as a taster - I want to know more. Nigel Walter

Brilliant piece of work, hoping to receive a trial copy. Martin Kelly

*Photoshop Layers Texture Trick (Matthew Lohden)

A bit too quick - can we have an abstraction? Richard Payne

Neat trick! Ben Wallbank

This looked very useful. Phil Oldfield

The end result looked incredibly useful and if possible it would be great if this could be posted somewhere. Ben Hopkins

Fantastic tip. James Murray

Great little tip, quick, easy and good results.. Phil Green

*GDL animation of mobile ATM van (Alan McDonnell)

Impressive. Demonstrated beautifully, the power of GDL. Phil Green

Good to see possibilities of GDL animation. Peter Bennison

Interesting and very good work  Ross Cahill-O'Brien

I think we all loved it. Nigel Walter

Proof in the pudding, nice guy, knows his stuff. Martin Kelly

Love the suttle use of animation with so much detail. Good sales tool. Daniel Dusoswa

*The Mac/PC purchasing economic/functional argument (Chris Philips)

I am utterly bored and repulsed by Mac zealots - puts me off buying one though I often consider it, especially with the intro of the Mac/Intel. Richard Payne
{Editors Note: next year we can give you a prize in a special 'Grumpy Old Men' prize category....]

How can I broach this with our PC fanatical IT man! Just what I wanted to hear. Ben Wallbank

Good to know, as a Mac-ista and shareholder. ;-) James Murray

Interesting, and useful to know, even though I would be buying Mac anyway. Nigel Walter

Confirmed my own impressions of the Mac/Wintel debate. Martin Kelly

*Prizes from Graphisoft UK

:-) I protest about prizes always going to the extremes ..... the oldest, the best beard, etc. This average-ist. Us normal, average folk are being discriminated against! Average folk - stand up for your rights! :-) Richard Payne

This was quite funny, but has anyone considered that the prize for the person that keeps coming is the reason she keeps coming? I suppose I shouldpropose a youngest delegate prize and hope that no first or second years come next year. Ben Hopkins

Nice touch at the end, unexpected, maybe one for the best newcomer for next year. Martin Kelly
[Eds note; good idea! will you still be a newcomer next year?]

Saturday Evening

Night out in the Centre! Antibo's again, the Italian restaurant

Very good food, but the staff didn't seem to control the situation. Mette Mikkelsen
[Eds Note: 34 were booked, but 39 turned up, so the staff managed in the circumstances]

Great night out, can't believe i didn't get in till 5am. Next time I'll have to drag some more people with me. Phil Oldfield

It's time to branch out from there I think. Somewhere cozier, easier to talk and wander. James Murray

Good as ever, a nice way to end the event. Peter Bennison

As always a great finish to a time well spent. Daniel Dusoswa

The ArchiCAD 10 Cookie - sent by Kim Harris

1. Set the tracker to "On demand" in Project Preferences
2. Put in the first node of a straight wall in plan
3. Type "a" then input 12.345 then type another "a", without touching the mouse or any other key. Do not press the "Enter" key.
4. Wait for about 10 seconds, watching the tracker box.
It should move to the centre, top third of the plan view. Read the information in it, giving you a countdown to the start of the game.
5. Use the cursor keys to gently lower the helicopter; you may need to start with the up arrow depending on which direction it starts moving at the start of the game, and simultaneously the side arrows to get it to land vertically and not crash at an angle.
Speed as it reaches the bottom of the screen must be below 4, maybe even below 3, not sure, for a score rather than a crash landing.
Good luck!
PS I'm using a PC at work. Maybe it doesn't work properly on a Mac.
