ACUE 2004 : Programme

Thursday 9th September

Afternoon

1400-1700: ArchiCAD Arrivals: Arrivals at Nightingale Hall, Nottingham University, in the afternoon any time between 2pm and 5pm. Refreshments will be available. It's a great chance to meet old and new ACUE friends in the common room and gardens, explore the campus, try the nearby fitness centre or swimming pool.
Workfair: Delegates are invited to bring examples of work to be pinned up on nearby screens.

1700-1900: Welcome to ArchiCAD University, followed by ArchiCAD Encounter

ArchiCAD Encounter: Groups, then Plenary: 6 Discussion groups in the gardens and common room. Delegates, in groups of approx 20, introduce themselves and discuss how they are using ArchiCAD, Plotmaker, Artlantis etc in their work.
Facilitators help to steer and record the discussion, and report back before the evening meal. This is always a wonderful way to discover what other people do, and to introduce yourself to others.
Facilitators likely to be: James Murray, Ben Wallbank, Herbert Peter, Link Ellis, Matthew Lohden and Chris Phillips.

1900-2000: Evening meal

2000-2015: Workshop Previews: Plenary: Some images giving a flavour of what the Workshops are likely to include.
It will help if you look at the descriptions and try to suggest choices at the time you make your booking. You are not bound by the choice, although your choice may decide which ones are given larger space, or which get dropped.

2015-2200: Keynote presentations/ Case Studies: Plenary: Leading users of ArchiCAD talk about their experience, in short presentations. We offer you:

  • Hurley Robertson, one of the largest ArchiCAD users in the UK show their committment to the Virtual Building and present examples of links between Design, presentation and documentation, presented by Ben Wallbank, an ACUE regular. 2015-2045
  • View-by-View: Mitch Boryslawski of View by View is an electrifying speaker and one of the most persuasive advocates of the Virtual Building model as the central database for building design, project management and facility management. He is currently project manager for the construction of the billion dollar Letterman Digital Arts Center complex in Northern California for Lucas Studios. Mitch has used ArchiCAD and Navisworks to model and predict every part of the construction from architectural, structural and service drawings. This integrated model is a shared real time 3D database which facilitates managed change, but avoids the unexpected design change problems that normally afflict fast track US construction projects. Mitch's committment to ArchiCAD is linked to his belief in the power of GDL and its easy link to Navisworks. 2045-2200.

2200-0000: : Retire thirsty to the Bar for the rest of the evening.
The time in the Bar is one of the most useful benefits of ACUE, because you can make friends and alliances, and ask the questions. Wear your badge, and you won't need an introduction. If you have been a member of the real ArchiPUB, remember that only Virtual Chairs may be thrown... and the ACUE organiser deserves all those Guinesses you have been promising!

Afternoon

1400-1600: Tips and Tricks and Short Case Studies:
Delegates and Tutors present examples of work, or of special techniques they are using - 10-15 min presentations. Tutors can take questions. This is a great way to round off ACUE, always discovering unexpected jewels.

Ideas for this session will be added to this list gradually (please submit ideas): Delegates will be canvassed during the event to offer something. Please offer! Topics will be suggested in advance, gradually:

  • Launch of new book "ArchiCAD Practice" english edition. Herbert Peter
  • Launch of IOMWAC Book and progress on GDL Cookbook 4. David Nicholson-Cole
  • ArchiCAD University Winter School in Salzburg Jan 2005. David Nicholson-Cole
  • ArchiCAD University Spring School in Las Vegas March 2005. David Nicholson-Cole
  • GDL teaching projects in Denmark and Nottingham: collaboration with industry. Marie Sofie Larsen
  • ArchiShock 3D . Pavol Elias
  • ArchiPhysik - building physics analysis plug in. Gerald Faustenhammer
  • A smart trick with ArchiTerra / ArchiForma. Fabrizio Diodati

Tips and Tricks session has evolved over the years from a 'Question time' style event to a sequence of Short Presentations (10-15mins) by delegates on interesting things that they are doing. Please bring work that you could show on CD or Zip cartridge. We cannot be sure of direct Internet access, so it's safest to ensure that your presentation is also on CD (whether as ArchiCAD files, or HTML) is self contained and will work on the average machine equipped with ArchiCAD 8, Navisworks, Artlantis, Explorer, Movie player and Flash player - we are likely to have a PC and projector set up for the purpose. If you have your own laptop with you, you can run a demo direct to the projector.
The Tips and Tricks session has often been a good way to identify future tutors or speakers at ArchiCAD University, so don't be shy!

Saturday Evening: dinner and sleepover

Dinner in Nottingham City Centre for those staying overnight. Overseas or long distance delegates are welcome to stay over till Sunday morning for a very reasonable increment on the conference fee - much cheaper than a hotel.

If the evening is warm, you will be amazed at how vibrant Nottingham City centre is, it's busier than Barcelona on a Saturday night - and very safe until midnight! Nottingham has a greater density of bars, clubs and eateries than anywhere in England so we are eating early, to enable you to explore later in the evening. Taxis home are from Wheeler Gate. Do not stay in the City Centre after 1-2am (too many drunks). Saturday Stayover delegates will be given City Maps. Because of the Danish ancestry of Nottingham, 'GATE' means street, not gate.

Antibos restaurant

We shall be eating at Antibo's in Nottingham.

You can see a VR of Antibo's restaurant. We have arranged a special group deal for the evening, £ 5 per head for starter and main only, £ 10 per head for 3 coursemeal (ACUE paying for the starters) and £ 15 per head for 3 courses with main from the specialities menu. email the ACUE organiser with your choice. Meet at Antibos at 7.30 pm. Followed by a walkabout in the City Centre.
