Michel Rojkind, Mexico

Architect Michel Rojkind of Mexico is doing a short lecture tour and holiday in the UK and Germany and we are lucky to have him at Nottingham University during 6-9 September. He will be with us for ArchiCAD Summer School, and moves onto Germany the following week.

In 1997, Michel Rojkind, partner of Adriá + Broid + Rojkind, traded in his job as drummer for a popular rock band in Mexico and Latin America, to concentrate fully on his vocation as architect. Rojkind brings as much artistic passion to his design work as he did to drumming.

Michel Rojkind was born in México City in 1969. He studied architecture in Universidad Iberoamericana 1989-94. He worked independently from 1993 to 1998. From 1999 to 2002 he teamed up with Isaac Broid and Miquel Adriá to form Adriá + Broid + Rojkind Arquitectos in which they collaborated for three years and designed more then 25 projects. He was editor of <FWD> specialized technology section for international architecture magazine ARQUINE 2000-2001. With the idea of investigating new directions in 2002 he opened his own office rojkind arquitectos s.c. parallel to his office. In 2004 together with Tatiana Bilbao, Arturo Ortiz and Derek Dellekamp they founded “MXDF” urban research investigation center.

His practice make heavy use of 3D modelling to explore design ideas. Rojkind and his partners and associates, have won several public and private competitions, due to their ability to try very many different alternatives before submitting work to each competition. 3D Virtual building and rendering software allows him to deliver stunning presentations every day which is essential for someone who works so closely with his clients.

His F2 house, for Alfredo Fuentes, was widely published and honoured in the 2002 issue of Architectural Record as one of the houses of the year.

Michel presents projects to clients, through rendering, virtual reality scenes, animations and models. For the F2 house, Rojkind explains. "To be able to have a walkthrough of his house with the materials and lighting we had been talking about and not have even spend a penny in construction yet, for him was incredible."
Images of his own house, an astonishing work in deep curving red forms, have been adopted as the logo for Graphisoft's ArchiCAD 10.

In competition entries, his recent explorations of freeform hi rise structures are an interesting new direction.
