ACUE 2004 9-10-11 Sept 2004, Nottingham: Report

ArchiCAD University Europe 2004 Summer School has now happened!

Over 140 attended, enjoying fine weather, and the very good food of Nightingale Hall in Nottingham University. We had a large contingent of Graphisoft personnel, including 6 from Hungary. Everybody got here and got home safely.

ArchiCAD Encounter

ArchiCAD Encounter was a series of Discussion Groups of 20 each in the gardens of Nightingale Hall. The session was headed by a delegate who was an experienced ArchiCAD User (but not a reseller), who could lead the conversation or give some more direction to the discussion.
Each group member gave a small introduction including AC experience and place of employment and role within their workplace, and the comments of each member was noted by the group leader. The discussion then reflected the comments noted, with the group leader inviting open discussion amongst members until everyone was satisfied. The Encounter session lasted for 60 minutes, after which each group leader provided a 5 minute report to the plenary. It is interesting how each group emerged with their own themes as the discussion evolved from the interests of the participants. A summary will be posted later on the website.

Case Studies

Ben Wallbank of Hurley Robertson Architects showed a range of the work done by the practice, and then zoomed in on some details of work for an atrium and facade details in a major refurbishment of part of Finsbury Circus. The interaction of 3D and 2D construction detailing was truly amazing.

Mitch Boryslawski, View by View has been project managing the Letterman Digital Arts Institute for George Lucas, in San Francisco for the last couple of years. What started out as doing some renderings from the original architect's AutoCAD drawings turned into a full blown project management job with a 3D ArchiCAD model containing all structural, HVAC and other services information, all backed up with Navisworks as a means of checking the overall progress of the job and clash detection of services and structure.

Tips and Tricks

This is now a tradition for the Summer and Winter Schools, to have a final session in which Delegates come up and show some of the work they have been doing in the previous year. It's also a chance for tutors to show an extra trick that was enjoyed during the workshops, and for announcements to be made.
