Where are we? ...the Edelweiss Berggasthof in Feuerkogel

Feuerkogel is the mountain overlooking the town of Ebensee, which is at the south end of the Traunsee lake - to the north is Gmunden, and further north there is Linz. The Berggasthof Edelweiss is the highest building of the resort. Four ski pistes start within a few metres of the hotel front door and 3 lifts converge on the hotel. Ski down from there, and you have access to all the other lifts and runs. The Edelweiss is all-providing: food, accommodation, drinks, function spaces, the hospitality of a very nice Austrian family who are also great cooks. If we get enough participants, we also use the comfortable Chalets adjacent to the hotel.
Address: c/o Familie Neubacher, Berggasthof Edelweiss, Feuerkogel 13, A-4802 Ebensee. Tel: 0043 (0) 6133 / 5490. Email: edelweiss@feuerkogel.at.See the Ski information page for more about the Edelweiss and Feuerkogel...

ACWS 2007 Travel information!

From the UK? It's cheap to get there! Ryanair from Stansted to Salzburg!

This year we have researched the possible flight times, and found that the best deal, balancing departure times, arrival times, pricing etc is to fly to Salzburg, Austria on a Sunday.

Stansted Airport
Ryan Air

Skyscanner flights to Salzburg / Ryanair's Website / Salzburg Airport / Stansted Airport / Streetmap-Stansted / Austria Map / Top Tips for Travellers /

Book now if you like!
1. Check the availability of a flight first
2. Book the Winter School place next, THEN
3. Book your flight when I have replied.
We have confirmed the dates with the hotel, and the organiser (DNC) has bought his ticket! (there is a Ryan flight from Nottingham direct to Salzburg, but leaves/arrives at very bad travel times). When we get nearer the date and the hotel is close to full, check with organiser that there is space in the hotel or chalets (we might book more chalets... or close the doors)

Bringing your own Skis / snowboard? - Ryan have the answers for you!

Low cost airlines are ticketless, ie, if you buy it yourself: you fill out your details on line, then they display a booking confirmation, print that out and take it with you when you check in, including the credit card you used for the purchase. Note down the REFERENCE NUMBER and carry that separately in case you lose your print out. Bring your Passport!

There is a trick and a bit of luck to buying the ticket. Sometimes, booking late at night will get more generous prices from the RyanAir computer than booking in the day. The price quoted to you will be one thing, but the final cost will include Airport and Luggage Taxes which can be perhaps £ 40 more than the fare, both ways. There is a chance that if nobody looks at Ryanair's site for a week the price goes down a bit. But who can be sure? Don't leave it too late or there will be no more seats and the price rises as the plane fills.

Checkin information: Ryanair.com, the world's most popular web based airline according to Google, are renowned for for the right sort of punctuality, well over 90%+ arriving on time. But they are also renowned for the wrong sort of punctuality, i.e. closing the checkin ruthlessly 45 mins before flight departure time, without mercy. If you are late, you will be refused access and required to pay at least € 60 euro penalty to be allowed to fly on the next flight - even if it means sitting up all night. So don't be late for the checkin. No exceptions are made, however good your story. (You can take out insurance for about £ 6 when buying your ticket against bona fide lateness).
Read Top Tips for Travellers.
Mid Sept 2006, the flight price was ONE PENNY out and £ 30 return, but it will going up in stages, entirely due to people looking or booking at the website for that flight. Add approx £ 40 for the return fare to cover Luggage, Taxes etc..

Parking at Stansted: This is about £7 per day, and there is always plenty of space for parking with a free shuttle to the terminal from the carpark. Credit cards work in the parking machine. Parking can be booked in advance, but there is always space.

Baggage allowance: RyanAir permit 20 kilos of luggage in the Hold, and 10 kilos of hand luggage. Sports equipment is charged for and you must notify them beforehand.

Rail to Stansted: Rail to Stansted is pretty dire from regional destinations, but excellent from London, with fast frequent shuttles to Liverpool Street Station, even on Sundays. The airport rail station is in the terminal.

Staying overnight near Stansted? Stansted Hotels may be needed on the return, as the flight returns home on a Sunday night, and public transport is thinning out - good to London, but thin elsewhere. If you have an onward fliight to Denmark, Scotland, etc the following day, Google for Stansted Hotels, or check out the site here : Holiday Extras, Airport Accommodation, London Toolkit ....

An ArchiCAD Winter School chartered Bus will meet the plane, and go direct to Feuerkogel, to meet the cablecar. Rail travellers can get a shuttle bus from Salzburg Railway station to the airport to pick up our bus. It's only about 5 km. On our return, the bus will bring us to the station for us to drop luggage, and we have the option of looking at the city.

From Ireland? How can you connect with our flight?

Coming by Rail?

There are trains to Ebensee from Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz, Wien, and Budapest, mostly changing at Attnang-Puchheim when you get closer. If you can get to Salzburg in time to take a shuttle bus to the airport, you can join our ArchiCAD Winter School bus. If going direct to Ebensee by train, aim for the 1700 cablecar (you need a taxi to get to cablecar from rail station, its uphill, dark with narrow icy pavements) or if you miss that, aim for our special 1800 cablecar. the ACWS bus will stop briefly at the Ebensee station in case anybody is waiting.

Map - http://members.telering.at/hans.goebl/bahnnetz-en.htm - Ebensee is between Gmunden and Bad Ischl.

Coming by Car?

One of the reasons that Feuerkogel cannot expand hugely is the limited car parking. However, it should be alright on a Sunday evening when the day skiers come down and vacate the car park. If you arrive early you will find it full - wait for the later car. There is parking at the Cablecar station. Try to arrange to come in pairs or with friends, so that the number of cars is not 1 to 1.

Map and Directions

The Cablecar

There is no access to the Feuerkogel plateau except by Cablecar. From Ebensee, the Cablecar Station taking you up to Feuerkogel is about 1 km uphill from the Rail Station. If you are coming by car, the last scheduled cable car leaves at 6pm. There is easy parking by the Cablecar base station. If you arrive later than 1800, you will have to find local Bed and Breakfast. Do not attempt to walk up! This is only for the super fit locals, with snowshoes in Daylight. (and do not attempt to ski down, this is a Black run!) On Sunday of our arrival, there should be at least 2 Cablecar runs for our party.

There may be none after that time, unless they hold it later for us if our bus is delayed by a delayed flight. When the bus comes, they will need 2 or perhaps 3 Lifts to get us all up. So if coming by car or train on Sunday, do no panic utterly if you are slightly later than 1800. Phone ahead to 0044-7970-059525 (DNC's phone) to find out.

Right: A ride up the Cablecar in Summer. There's another small carpark down the hill.

Need to stay in London en route?

>A lot of travellers from afar have to come or depart via London. we recommend the Travelodge only 300 m from St Pancras Station, close to Kings Cross and the British Library, very affordable, hospitable and much used by ACUE long-distance travellers over the years. For more budget conscious travellers (young ones), consider Youth Hostels Association Oxford St, YHA St Pauls, Hostelling International, Accommodation London, the Youth Hostels, or the YMCA in the City.. If staying in Stansted overnight, see under Stansted Airport, above.

Travel Insurance: do I need it?

Yes you do! Most travel insurance covers normal winter sporting and travel risks (i.e. non competitive or extreme sports) and you must ensure that you have your own cover. Feuerkogel is a charming place, but in the event of an accident, there is NO Road access, only Helicopter or Cablecar - expensive! You can book insurance with RyanAir at the time of booking, but its more likely that you already have general travel insurance for the year. Whatever the case, if you are not sure, please check!

ArchiCAD University / ArchiCAD Winter School does not accept any liability or meet any of the bills, even temporarily, for people who failed to have their own travel insurance.
