We wish to highlight the important work carried out by David Nicholson-
Cole and the investment he has made into the teaching of GDL. Over the
years he has compiled his teaching expertise into the GDL Cookbook.
This excellent source has earned a worldwide recognition in the world
of Computer Aided Design and object technology in Architecture and building
industry. The GDL-Cookbook written by David Nicholson-Cole is the 'bible
for GDL developers to create intelligent and smart objects', and is
widely used by architects and other teaching institutions. The GDL cookbook
is truly a masterpiece. |
Of Cookbook THREE, it was said on GDL-Talk by Laurent Godel: "ASTONISHING OVERWHELMING A WORK OF ART THE DEFINITE BIBLE FROM THE EVANGELIST !!!! Just got the CB III from the postman. I am out of words, out of breath. And not because of those contributions from my humble self! This is an extensive, exhaustive, in-depth look into each and every imaginable aspect of GDL." Laurent Godel, 'gdlguru' , Barcelona |
David Nicholson-Cole is a true master of cooking up books on GDL and teaching the world about the remarkable power of it. He has done more to spread the knowledge of GDL than anyone else in the world. David's series of GDL Cookbooks have brought clarity and understanding of everything from simple GDL concepts to the most advanced. His ability to communicate the power and potential of GDL to this field has a tremendous impact on the digital world of architecture and construction. The Cookbook does much more than just teach the mechanics of programming
GDL code, it captures the essence of the convergence of architecture
and programming. The new Cookbook 3 is another major triumph in this
crusade. |
GDL is habit forming! :-) Thanks to the GDL Cookbook, the ArchiCAD GDL manual is actually making sense! John Zdralek, Texas |
I am impressed with the teach-have fun-experiment blend in the cookbook.
Reminds me of the Whole Earth Catalogue days! The parabolic looks great.
As does so much else. Your enthusiasm is infectious. Walter Dix, Ontario, Canada |
Marmalade Press must really be Flourish and Blotts, as the new GDL Cookbook
3.01 is clearly the Standard Book of (GDL) Spells. Any couple of tips
within quickly pays for the book, IMHO. With the complete text also in
PDF form on the companion CD, searching is convenient; no incantations
needed. All sample objects (and more) are included. Karl Ottenstein, Sandpoint, Idaho |
Cookbook 3 is just fantastic and has opened my eyes to another world
out there! This is what ArchiCAD is really about! Have been using your
Picture Objects with great success in my Urban Model. Michael Murphy, Australia |
Its unbelievable how many useful things and how much knowledge is packed
in there. Very often I take your book out of the shelf to look something
up when there are any questions about library objects or problems in GDL.
It's actually worth three or more times the price I paid for. Thanks for
your precious work and also thanks to all the others who contributed their
knowledge to build this great work. Christian Cerliani, Switzerland |
For the first time I got in touch with GDL: I bought your CookBook 3
and jumped into GDL... there are two way to learn swimming: lying on the
floor exercising the correct movements or jumpin« into the water... you
seem to prefer the second way... I like your pace! Thank you very much
for this excellent book; I«m eager to discover GDL... Francisco Moreno Rivilla , Barcelona |
Thanks for creating the GDL Cookbook. Before I was so afraid to even
look at GDL script but going through the cookbook I can now understand
certain lines of script. The more I explore the more I begin to understand
and with your book I have a better understanding of GDL. Keep up the good
work. Austin Godfrey , UK |
I have been studying the GDL Cookbook 3 since I got it and I can tell
you that it's excellent. With it, one can easily get the elegance of the
script and many secrets of ArchiCAD, unrevealed in the software GDL book.
Thank you David, it helps and will help me a lot. Raoul Cenan, France |
The cookbook is perfect. I was moaning to a mate here a couple of weeks
ago that manuals in general are hard to digest because they are often
completely removed from the users context. The cookbook approach, chockablock
full of actual application, seems at first glance to be haphazard compared
to the GDL manual, but one soon appreciates the emphasis on actual task
solution that this book presents. Greg Edwards, Australia. |
Without your cookbook people like myself would never have found the
interest, courage and encouragement to learn GDL. Erika Epstein |
You might want to invest in the "GDL Cookbook" by David Nicholson-Cole,
it is a very good starting point for diving into the GDL world. I found
that opening up objects and viewing their script is a very good way to
familiarize yourself with GDL (that's how I started). Warning - GDL can be addictive. David Larrew, AIA, GDLA Houston, Texas |
Thank You for writing the GDL Cookbook. ItÕs real great stuff. Working
slowly through the chapters You become aware of the great power of GDL
and You begin to understand how ArchiCAD is working. I think itÕs not amazing that You can build funny formed objects. No, itÕs amazing that the objects You can make are smart and intelligent. I most like objects with FOR-NEXT loops and IF statements, that have become tools, that are very helpful in the daily work. And I like the User Interface very much. Because having the UI I could finally make a planlayout object, in whose UI-boxes I can fill in the names and addresses of the project and the persons belonging to it (every cheap architectural CAD-software has something like this, but not ArchiCAD). I have been working through the discovery course and read some chapters of the voyager course until now. IÕm really learning a lot by the cookbook method. I find it very easy to understand, even if English is not my mother tongue. And I work on GDL each night after work and on weekend, I have been infected by the GDL-fever. Joachim Suehlo , Germany |
Thank you for all your good work!!! |
I received your CB3 and I can only say this book is great! So much creative
input on paper I havn't seen before. Mario Bretscher, Switzerland |
YES ! I just received CB3 yesterday. Perfect, thank you. Great improvement
in DTP ! I think the new presentation is really better : more "airy",
clearer... Geoffroy Magnan , Belgium |
Structured GDL programming has changed my life....well, maybe it hasn't,
but it has certainly made my poor attempts at GDL much more oomprehensible
when I come back to them 3 months later. Love the Cookbook, and looking
forward to purchasing the Cookbook 3. David Sutherland |
I'm in GDL-Heaven since Thursday last week! I have a GDL Cookbook2 now in my hands and started "eating" it bit by bit! I was very pleased to realize, that I was doing almost all of the basics you recommended in the right way. In the next days and weeks I will overlook my existing objects for improvements, especially the wheel loader, which sometimes "cooked" my brain cells really hot! What I saw until now opened a new universe to me and I'm optimistic to be able to reflect the professional education of yours in my next GDL-projects! Many thanks for writing this book from here and now, Karl Heinz Pfefferer, Germany |
Thank you again for writing the Cookbook series. It's been invaluable
to me as a foundation for exploration. You translate the GEEKTALK of the GDL Manual into human language. The Hungarians think of GDL as the cryptic code of a secret and nefarious society, not unlike modern chess notation. This is not helpful. You helped open a new, fascinating world to me. Dwight Atkinson |
When I think about it, meeting you is one of the best thing in my university
life, you teach me something that could shift my whole career. I am not
exactly sure about what I want to do yet. Somehow, there is a merge between
architecture, computer programming and database management. Alfred Man, Pasadena California & Nottingham |
As you may have noticed, ArchiCAD's GDL manual is very much to the
point and does not show many examples. You could say that it is heuristically
challenging. David, Thank you very much for the GDL Cookbook. You produced a very
thorough and readable piece of work. Congratulations! |
I'm sure most Archicad users realize that understanding GDL is the most
powerful way of maximizing your productivity with the program.Unfortunately,
not all firms, moreso the smaller ones, are going to have the resources
and the time to do this as much as they would like, ... but whatever the
resources you have ... you can add considerably to your efforts by using
David's excellent book. It is packed with information, tips and tricks and has an excellent section on the 6.5 User interface and much, much more.I have used the book to refine and give more power to my own Archicad library,it has helped me enormously.I have embraced David's "structured" approach to GDL development and I'm quite confident that it is the only way. Thanks David,... keep up the good work. Mike Carbone, Australia |
I was a little disappointed with Archicad until I stumbled into its
'hidden garden' - GDL. I now realise that, middle aged or no, drawing
things is old hat. I have to learn to program them. William Henderson |
I am new to ArchiCad, and GDL scripting. The company I work for (Summit
Constructions, Perth Western Australia) has been using ArchiCad for several
years and not yet really got into it's wonderful power and flexibility
with the GDL side of it. We bought GDL Cookbook earlier this year and
a couple of us 'drafties' have read thru and "tried" to complete a number
of your exersices It is full of interesting tips and tricks that have
helped us enormously. My biggest regret is we cannot have access to your Voyager course here in Perth. Trevor Wright Summit Projects Perth, WA (Oct 99): |
I've been working with GDL for a while until I discovered your GDL-Cookbook
- and it was amazing! Every problem I've had could be solved with it. Marc Assman |
David, I'm very happy. Your book is this year "Best Buy" product. Every
day I produce 1 new full parametric object.Yesterday-tube rail, and today
Chimney hole, for inserting in to the wall via Window tool. Your CookBook is the best manual I ever read! I like the little pieces of humor in chapters. It is realizing the words of our "father of teachers" J.A. Komensky "School with game." I think Your CookBook should be in the standard documentation package with any ArchiCAD licence. Branislav Drgon, Slovakia |
ArchiCAD is very powerful. The capabilities of GDL are incredible (my
hat is off to DNC who inspired me to push my knowledge). I am an ArchiCAD
believer. James Huether |
I have enjoyed studying your GDL cookbook, it has helped enormously.
In the past six months I have spent a lot of time developing my GDL.It
is an investment that I have no hesitation making. I have used a lot of
your revealing explanatory work to help me understand some elusive GDL
concepts. For example I have recently started using arrays to enter parameter values. Arrays are, as you suggested in your book, enormously powerful.I have rewritten a lot of my old gdl to take advantage of this and many other of your recommendations. Mike Carbone, W.Australia |
