ACUE Winter School 2004 : 17-24 January 2004

Learn more about ArchiCAD! Ski/snowboard with ArchiCAD users

Ebensee Views

We are in the Edelweiss Hotel that is 1600m high, and with only about 20m walk or ski from the front door to the nearest lifts and pistes.

The pattern of each weekday day is that we make full use of the pistes, the lifts and daylight until 4-5. There are many lifts in various directions, plenty of choice for the day. We would expect good skiers to spend some of their day time helping others, just as they get help with ArchiCAD in the evening.

The early evening is for sauna, drinking, sleep, email or games, finishing with dinner at 6 pm. Then at 8 pm, we start with a teaching session with laptops and projector, until people want to stop - usually about 11pm or midnight. Bring a laptop for best learning results! There's a kellerbar for those who want to talk till later, and broadband internet access for those who can't manage for a week without email.

ACUEWinter School is organised by ArchiCAD University Secretariat and the 'ArchiCAD User Association Austria'.

The ACUE Winter School 2003 on the Feuerkogel mountain was so successful that we must repeat it!

The pattern for Winter School is that we are out and about during daylight hours, making use of all the skilifts and cablecar; during the evening, from 8pm to midnight, we enjoy presentations and practical workshops about ArchiCAD and its practice and related software. Plenaries are in English, but workshops are mostly in English and a few in German. The delegates are a mixture of ArchiCAD users from Britain, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany and Austria - and a few from even further afield in 2003, eg Norway, Sweden and the USA!

Ski tuition is available during the week for beginners, 2-3 days is all you need to use the slopes with some confidence.

The Winter School runs from Saturday to Saturday, there is good rail access to Salzburg and Ebensee, and for air travellers, we recommend RyanAir Stansted-Salzburg.

FEEDBACK and REPORT 2004

Programme of events for the week:
This will be similar to last year. Precise details of workshops are decided by tutors and delegates depending on who is in the party, Outline themes for each evening are as below.
The pattern is: a Plenary
for one hour for all 8-9pm, in english. Then after a beer break we cruise till 11pm or later in Workshops of our choosing, up to 5 at the same time in different parts of the Edelweiss hotel, on topics offered by tutors and chosen by delegates - to do with the theme of the evening. Look at the Report of last year for ideas and pictures. Everyone is encouraged to bring a laptop and dongle, so they can fully enjoy jamming with ArchiCAD friends polishing up their skills. This is a VERY relaxed and good way to learn.

Sunday: hire ski equipment, first day out and about on slopes, with ski school for beginners, starting mid-morning.
   Evening:

  • Object making, and Object making without GDL (for beginners), Introduction to GDL (for intermediate), Advanced GDL (for the more brave and experienced), Add-ons which make GDL objects (for the curious).
  • ArchiCAD 3D/Plotmaker Construction Documentation: The serious stuff! Better 2D and 3D work with ArchiCAD, Plotmaker, Publish and Calculate, Interactive Schedules, Office standards, procedures.
  • These will be presented in the form of 2 workshops per evening, detailed topics of each of the 4 workshop periods will be circulated at the event, delegates are free to pick or change, and suggest special topics that are relevant to the channels.
  • Similar Topics will be covered in both English and German, in different corners of the Hotel.

Wednesday: Skiing or snowboarding etc all day. Ski in friendly groups. learn from some of the better skiers.
Evening: Second evening of the two Channels:

Thursday: Skiing or snowboarding etc all day. Ski in friendly groups. learn from some of the better skiers.
Evening: Interesting Stuff: Last year we did a plenary on Navisworks, ArchiPhysik, ArchiFacade, followed by Workshops on Macromedia Flash, Photoshop, and Cigraph tools. If delegates ask, we can continue/repeat some of the previous night's workshops. If conditions are night, we might enable more floodlit skiing. David NC would like the opportunity to show off EcoTect, wonderful environmental modelling and prediction software.

Friday: Skiing etc all day. Ski in friendly groups. Return the skis to the hire shop in the evening.
Evening: Delegates Night. Last year we had some very interesting short special presentations from tutors and delegates, and the evening went on till midnight. Tutors can make use of this time to do short presentations of specially requested topics not covered in earlier workshops. We shall follow this pattern.

Saturday: Going home day - tour of Salzburg. Cablecar down to Ebensee and bus to Salzburg for some touring. Mozart has 2 houses in Salzburg, there is a Castle, a Cathedral and lovely City centre, Museums and Art galleries, all within walking distance. RyanAir's flight departs in the early evening.
